Tesla’s paint has a reputation in the detailing industry, and it’s earned. The factory clear coat is noticeably softer than that of most other manufacturers, which means rock chips appear faster, swirl marks accumulate more easily from routine washing, and the paint degrades under UV exposure more quickly than that of a comparable premium vehicle. None of this is a manufacturing flaw exactly – it’s the result of production prioritization. But it does mean Tesla owners who care about the condition of their vehicle need to address paint protection early, not after the damage has already started.
At Atomic Auto Spa, we regularly work on Teslas.
We’re a certified GYEON Quartz coating and a certified STEK paint protection film installer. Both products are well-suited to Tesla’s paint chemistry, and we’re familiar with the specific characteristics of each model. Call (512) 888-9310 or book your consultation.
What Makes Tesla Paint Different
The short version: Tesla runs a lean production operation, and the paint process reflects that. Clear coat thickness on Tesla vehicles tends to be on the thinner side compared to traditional automakers, and the formula is softer. This isn’t unique to one model – it applies across the lineup to varying degrees, with the Model 3 and Model Y typically showing the most sensitivity.
The practical effect is that you’ll see rock chips on a Tesla in three to six months of highway driving, where another vehicle might take two to three years to show the same damage. Swirl marks from improper washing appear after fewer cycles. And the clear coat doesn’t hold up as long under constant UV exposure without protection.
This isn’t a reason to avoid buying a Tesla. It is a reason to protect oneself properly from the start, before the first I-35 commute puts chips in the hood.
Ceramic Coating for Tesla
We apply GYEON Quartz ceramic coatings to Tesla vehicles using the same process we use for any other car, so the prep work, surface standards, and quality expectations are the same. We don’t offer a Tesla-specific shortcut process.
Every Tesla ceramic coating service job at our shop starts with full paint decontamination: a hand wash with deionized water filtered under 10 PPM, iron fallout removal, and clay bar decontamination. We measure paint thickness across every panel before any correction work begins. Given how thin Tesla’s clear coat can be, that measurement step isn’t optional – it tells us exactly how much correction is safe on each panel.
After correction, we apply the appropriate GYEON Quartz package based on the vehicle’s use and the owner’s planned retention. GYEON’s SiO2 chemistry bonds to the clear coat at the molecular level and delivers consistent hydrophobic performance for years, not weeks. For a Tesla that parks outside and commutes on Central Texas roads, it’s one of the most practical investments you can make in the vehicle.
The ceramic layer also makes maintenance washing significantly easier. Tesla’s paint attracts contamination quickly. A coated surface sheds water, road grime, and brake dust more readily, which means less scrubbing during routine washes and less mechanical wear on the paint from washing itself.
Paint Protection Film for Tesla
For Tesla owners who want physical protection against rock chips and road debris, STEK PPF is the right product. The film absorbs impacts that would otherwise chip unprotected paint. Given that Tesla’s clear coat has little margin for error before chips reach the base coat, getting ahead of the damage with film before it starts makes considerably more sense than trying to correct it afterward.
We install STEK DYNOshield, DYNOmatte, and other STEK products on Tesla vehicles in all PPF coverage levels:
Full Front – Our most popular Tesla package. Covers the entire hood, fenders, front bumper, mirrors, and headlights. This addresses the majority of high-impact zones on I-35 and Central Texas highways. Most Tesla owners who regularly commute in the Austin area choose this coverage level.
Full Body – Every painted surface on the vehicle. The right choice for a new Tesla being kept long-term, or for owners who want zero paint exposure anywhere on the car. A full body on a Model Y or Model 3 typically requires two to three days of shop time.
Partial Front – Hood leading edge, front bumper, and mirrors. Entry-level coverage that addresses the most common chip locations. Better than nothing, but most highway commuters find that the full front package makes more sense after their first season with chips on the unprotected fender areas.
One thing worth knowing: we include professional paint correction on every PPF job at no additional charge. On a Tesla with even moderate mileage, this matters. We’re not putting film over swirl marks and calling it protected – we’re correcting the paint first so the film goes down over a clean, defect-free surface.
For Cybertruck owners: STEK has a product specifically suited to the stainless steel exoskeleton. The application process differs from paint film installation and requires specialized expertise. We handle Cybertruck PPF at our facility.
Window Tinting for Tesla
Tesla’s window situation is unique across the lineup. The Model 3 has a glass roof panel that extends over the rear seats. The Model Y has an even larger panoramic roof. The Model S and X have extensive glass coverage. And all of them come from the factory with relatively light tinting that lets significant heat into the cabin.
We provide Tesla window tinting for all Tesla models, including the glass roof panels, using ceramic tint film. Ceramic tint rejects heat through infrared blocking rather than light blockage, which is why it performs better than standard or carbon film even at lighter shades. For a Tesla with a panoramic roof that bakes in the Texas sun, the difference in cabin temperature is immediately noticeable.
A few things we’re careful about with Tesla tinting:
Autopilot cameras and sensors are affected by improper tinting. We know the camera locations on each Tesla model and work around them correctly. We don’t cover sensors or cameras, and we don’t use metallic films that interfere with signal transmission.
The heat gun works on curved glass panels requires experience with Tesla’s specific geometry. We’ve done enough Tesla tint jobs to know where the film is likely to lift or bubble, and how to prevent it during installation.
We offer ceramic tint in all legal shades for Texas. The front side windows in Texas must allow at least 25% of light in. The rear and back windows have no legal minimum. We’ll tell you exactly what’s legal and what makes practical sense for your specific model before we start.
Tesla Model-Specific Notes
Model 3 and Model Y – The most common Teslas we see. Paint is consistently soft across both. The glass roof on the Y extends far enough back that it’s worth tinting both the main panel and the rear section for full heat rejection. Full front PPF covers the areas most exposed to highway debris.
Model S and Model X – Lower production volume, higher paint quality relative to the 3 and Y, but still softer than traditional luxury car paint. A full-front PPF on an S or X is a straightforward investment, given the vehicle’s value. We’ve done full body coverage on both models.
Cybertruck – The stainless steel exoskeleton doesn’t get traditional paint film, but it does get marked and scratched from road use. STEK has a product designed for this application. We handle Cybertruck specifically and won’t try to apply standard paint film to a surface it isn’t designed for.
The Austin Tesla Factor
Tesla’s Gigafactory is in Austin, which means Central Texas has one of the highest concentrations of new Teslas in the country. Most of them are commuting on I-35 and the surrounding highways daily. Most of them will have significant chip accumulation within the first year of use without protection.
We’re located in Round Rock, about 20 minutes from downtown Austin via I-35. Tesla Austin owners make up the majority of our Tesla work. We also see significant volume from Cedar Park and Georgetown where Tesla ownership rates are high. The drive is short enough that there’s no real reason to compromise on installation quality by choosing a closer shop that isn’t certified for the products you’re investing in.
Book a consultation at our Round Rock facility and bring the Tesla in before the first season of highway driving puts chips in the hood. We’ll conduct a paint assessment and recommend the right protection package based on the paint’s actual condition and how you use the car.
Serving Tesla Owners Across Central Texas
We work with Tesla owners from across the Austin metro area including Austin and Hutto, as well as Georgetown, Cedar Park, Pflugerville, and Leander.
Our full exterior detail and maintenance car wash programs are available after installation to keep the protection performing.

Tesla Protection FAQs
Why is Tesla paint softer than other brands?
Tesla prioritizes production efficiency, and paint processes are one area where they run lean. The result is a thinner, softer clear coat that doesn’t hold up as well to mechanical wear and road debris as paint from traditional automakers. It’s not a defect – it’s a characteristic that owners need to account for.
Should I get PPF, ceramic coating, or both on my Tesla?
They protect against different things. PPF stops physical damage from rock chips, scratches, and debris impacts. Ceramic coating provides UV protection, chemical resistance, and protection against surface contamination. The strongest setup is STEK PPF with GYEON ceramic coating applied on top. If you have to choose one, PPF makes more sense on a Tesla, given how soft the paint is and how quickly chips appear with highway driving.
What does a full front PPF package cover on a Tesla?
The complete hood, both fenders, front bumper, side mirrors, and headlights. This covers every high-impact surface on the front of the vehicle and addresses the vast majority of damage patterns we see from driving on I-35 and Central Texas highways.
Does window tinting interfere with Tesla Autopilot?
Improperly applied tint can. We know where Tesla’s cameras and sensors are located on each model and install tint specifically to avoid covering them. We don’t use metallic films that interfere with signal transmission. Our Tesla tint work is done with the camera and sensor locations in mind from the start.
Can you tint the glass roof on a Tesla Model Y or Model 3?
Yes. The glass roof panels on Model 3 and Y are among the most common tint requests we get. Ceramic tint blocks heat through infrared rejection rather than just limiting visible light, which makes a significant difference in cabin temperature under the Texas sun.
Do you do Cybertruck PPF?
Yes. The Cybertruck stainless steel exoskeleton requires a different product and process than standard paint film. STEK makes a product specifically for this application, and we install it at our facility.
How soon after buying a new Tesla should I get protection?
Before the first highway drive, if possible. The paint is soft and chips easily. There’s no advantage to waiting, and every commute without protection is an opportunity for chips that require correction before film can be applied.
Do I need paint correction before ceramic coating on a new Tesla?
On a genuinely new delivery, the paint is usually in good enough condition for a light decontamination and coating application. On any Tesla with more than a few weeks of driving, correction is almost always worthwhile. We assess the paint in person before making any recommendations.
What GYEON packages do you offer for Tesla?
We offer the full GYEON Quartz professional line, including Q2 Pure, Q2 Mohs, Q2 Syncro, and Q2 Durabead. The right package depends on how long you plan to keep the vehicle and how it’s used. We’ll walk through the options during your consultation.
How long does Tesla PPF installation take?
Full-front coverage typically lasts one to two days. Full body coverage takes two to three days, depending on the specific model and condition. We don’t rush installations – moving too quickly on PPF shows up in the final result.
